The Art of McCarthy's Ballads.

The Listowel Visual Artists’ Collective (LVAC) were thrilled to announce a new group exhibition, “Rhymes and Reasons, The Art of McCarthy’s Ballads,” as part of the Sean McCarthy Memorial Weekend, in August 2024.

This unique exhibition featured the works of talented LVAC members, all inspired by the poignant and humorous ballads of the renowned folk musician, Sean McCarthy. The artists drew  inspiration from the book “Rhymes & Reasons,” compiled and edited by Mick MacConnell. A respected journalist and singer/songwriter from Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh now based in Kerry who officially opened the exhibition.

Among the pieces in the exhibition is artwork by LVAC Co-Founder and exhibition curator Louise Lynch, titled “Soft Kiss of Moonlight on Ballyhorgan Bog.” Inspired by a line from the ballad “Finuge,” which holds special significance as Louise resides in Finuge, making this exhibition particularly meaningful for her. “This exhibition is a heartfelt tribute to Sean McCarthy’s legacy,” said Louise. “Each artist has captured the essence of his ballads, translating the emotion and stories into visual art. It’s an honour to showcase our work in Finuge, a place that holds so much history and inspiration.”

The Sean McCarthy Memorial Weekend is an annual event celebrating the life and works of Sean McCarthy, featuring music, storytelling, and now, visual arts. This exhibition added a new dimension to the festivities, providing attendees with a visual journey through McCarthy’s lyrical landscapes.
